Don Martin’s career as a personable and dependable sea captain began when he was only 21. Early on he gained expertise in seamanship, from earning the highest Sea Scout rank of Midshipman (equivalent to Eagle Scout for landlubbers) to winning an impressive Gold Medal for sailing a 5.5 meter boat at the Acapulco Pre-Olympics. Later on Martin was winner of the celebrated Father’s Day Race in St. Thomas and he placed second in class during the Antigua Race week. In addition, he holds the transit record from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Thomas for a captain on a day-rate with an under 60’ cruising sailboat (Kelly-Peterson 46’, 5 days, 18 hours). For 30 years he has been delivering yachts across salt water everywhere from the Gulf of Mexico to Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and Palm Beach, Florida, throughout the Eastern and Western Caribbean, Bermuda, and Cuba. In the last two decades alone he has skippered approximately 70,000 nautical miles offshore from South America to the US Western Atlantic ports and inland along the Intracoastal Waterway, including 35 transits between Florida and the Caribbean, 10 transits between Newport, Rhode Island, Florida and the Caribbean and 25 Gulf Crossings between Texas and Florida. Other popular destinations include the Bahamas, Isla Mujeres, Roatan, Honduras, San Andres, Columbia, Boca Del Toros, Panama, Jamaica, and most islands in the Eastern Caribbean. Martin is a USCG licensed Yacht Delivery Captain having helmed more than 100 Caribbean, US East and Gulf Coast deliveries of private sail and power boats. He has delivered a 110’ Gaff Rigged Schooner from the Virgin Islands to Newport, RI. via Bermuda and has single-handed a 30’, no-engine Catamaran from Galveston, Texas to Clearwater, Florida. As well as being Captain of an 80’ MTU-powered Italian custom made high performance power boat for nine years, he was captain of a 77’ Rhodes Ketch out of Palm Beach, Florida. Martin was based in St. Martin, Netherlands Antilles for 12 years, and is therefore particularly familiar with the Caribbean Basin. He also lived in St. Thomas for several years where as yacht broker he became well-acquainted with yacht manufacturers and is highly knowledgeable regarding characteristics of boat models, including their peculiarities. |
